Desert or not?

Day 14
Idyllwild (179 mi) - Campground (190,5)

After a delicious breakfast we met Roadwalker at the bakery just before we left. Roadwalker is a Prof. of socioligy who is hiking and doing research on the hiking community...what a job...
We got a hitch to the trailhead and walked up the rather steep "Devils slide" to get back to the PCT. Because of a stormwarning we decided at a trailjunction not to summit San Jancinto, which is supposed to have amazing views. We walked on along Fuller Ridge (about 3000 meter elevation), where the wind became stronger an heavy dark clouds were coming closer. We prepared ourselfs for rain and walked on in a steady, rather fast pace to get to a lower elevation. On our way we met Velcro (he uses velcro to attach equipment to his backpack), who tried to set up is his tent close to the trail,  but then decided to walk with us to find a better campside. It was getting dark, but still there was no rain. We finally reached a campingspot that appeared to be more protected from the wind by big rocks, so we decided to set up our tents to have a fast dinner and fall asleep.

Day 15
Campground (190, 5) - Ziggy and the bear (210, 8)

After a rather cold night (about 0ºC), we walked mainly downhill, back into more desert like terrain. On our way down we had views over the valley, which had fields of windmills to produce electricity and really, really, really long trains driving through it.

Down in the valley, close by our planed destination of the day, hiking was slowed down by strong winds and loose sand. We finally arrived at Ziggy and the bear,  a trail-angels place close by the trail. Ziggy and the bear are an older couple who let thru hikers sleep in their backyard. Former thru-hikers and friends help them with the organization. It is so great to have trailangels: Showers, water, food, hikerboxes, (boxes where hikers can put their leftovers from their resupplypackages). After chatting with the other hikers we ate pizza from ceasars. We met Honeystick (Izzy), who also was at the Kickoff and who is a friend of Tutone and Methinks. Even with a huge wooden fence around the backyard it was very windy. We used tables to protect us from the wind when we cowboy camped in the backyard. It was windy but luckily not cold when we fell asleep...

Day 16
Izzy and the bear (210, 8) - Camping close to Mission Creek (230)

Velcro had already started earlier. We left at about 7.20 a.m., and walked along hundereds of windmills and entered San Bernardino National Forrest. Honeystick was in the lead (she is small, only 18 years old, has some kneeproblems but is hiking fast!!!)

After a steep climb, we caught up with Velcro. There Susanne had one of her famous sneeze attacks, which were described to sound similar to a machine gun (hitchhitchhitchhitchhitchhitchhitch). That was the birth of her trailname: Sneezl.
As we walked on we crossed our first creek, where we filtered water and cooled our feet. At the second small creek, Velcro an I were having a bath (after pre-washing) but we barely got wet. We passed the creek a few times and cowboycamped close to Mission creek at the end of the day. Honeystick walked faster and was ahead. Velcro (56, living in Israel, woodworker), showed us photos of a beautiful house that he has built. We made plans to get up early the next morning.

Day 17
Mission Creek (230) - campingspot (253)

We left at 5 a.m. Methinks was tired because he did not sleep well. Again we had to hike mainly uphill. Again the wheatherreport was giving a storm and snow warning. Again. In the desert. I expected the desert to be dry and warm...
After a long day of hiking, we were still on an higher elevation. Already tired we decided to walk on to find a protected campside. We passed an animal park with exotic animals, which are supposed be used as animal-actors in hollywood. We saw a bear in a small cage. It was sad and disturbung to see him walk up and down his small cage. We moved on and just before we reached the campingspot we were looking for we found ..... tatatat....TRAILMAGIC! A container filled with water, chocolate, bananas, jelly bellies...it is great. Not because we were starving, it was rather the surprise (ok, ok...also the chocolate) that improved our morale. After taking just a little bit, we hurried to set up our tents in expectation of the storm. We all were tired. everybody was preparing their dinner. Because of the drought in California alcohol stoves are not allowed. Susanne and I chose to not cook but just rehydrate our food (we have read about it, and a lot of hikers do it). Cold soacked macaroni cheese are kind of evil when it is already cold outside... We have to buy different food to rehydrate or get a gas stove. Idohan smashed potatoes are actually good, even cold;)

Day 18
Campingspot (253) - Highway to Big Bear City/Lake (266)

This was a cold night! Snow was on our tent, the condensation inside the tent was frozen and the waterbottles were frozen. Tutones tent was difficult to set up and nearly sacked under the weight of the snow and the wind.
It was still cold outside. With all our clothes on we hiked fast to become warm and to get to the highway to hitchhike to big bear city. At the highway a lot of cars drove by and for the first time it seemed like we are having a hard time getting a hitch. But then a car stopped and a hiker, who rented a car was doing the trailangel-job and took us to the post office in big bear city. "Doc"(not the fysiotherapist), also offered to bring us to big bear lake, where we planed to stay. We waited to get picked up again at a doughnut shop where we got the calories back that we had burned before. The owner of the shop was hiker-friendly and seemed to know everybody in town. We found a cozy cabin at the Honey bear lodge. After shopping at Vons we cooked a chili and had all the Vegetables we have missed, sitting by the fireplace and reciting monty python.

Day 19
Big Bare Lake (Zero)

Relaxing, Resupply and lost and found of mobile that got lost during a hitch in town (lucky Susanne;).

Like Felix wrote, we were fronzen the other day. Sitting in our tent, waiting for the storm to stop. We measured 6celsius. But we knew things would change, and they did...

The storm went away and for like a few hours the next morning, the air was soft and kind to us. We were gently taken into an amazing landscape of the desert mountains of Southern California. But than she came, little miss sunshine. Letting dripes of water poored out of our skin instead of clouds. 95F (about 38C) was measured in the shade yesterday. So that was kind of tough. The landscape, the mindset of just walking and the people make up for it though.

We have these amazing views and funny crazy people with retarted trailnames around us. Malibu for example. A guy from Seattle who just came on the trail after biking along the west cost from his home to San Diego. Now he is walking back home. His real name is Kirby, but while doing a very strong impression of former American gladiator Malibu, it was no doubt that this should become his trailname. (You should check out some videos on this (real) Malibu, I bet you will be impressed ;)... And so there is Methinks, purple princes (male), long spoon, guy on a buffalo, .... Al these names are connected to something that happened on the trail. Felix is reffered to the cat, as in Felix the cat, while he is al the time sneaky behind other people, catching up. Some want me to be 'Stamper', since I stood on a snake the other day. But we are not so convinced yet about it, so we will wait and see what names are going to stick on us.

Wat did we learn more? Ah yeah, that's right; sleeping with your feet up and slightly downhill, can make your face look like after plastic surgery. Felix now knows everything about it. We learned that getting up really early in the morning, see the sun come up while walking, taking a siesta after lunch time and walking during the night with a clear sky full of stars, are things that work out great( in the desert). And not to forget cowboy-camping. We did this yesterday and it was just marvelous. Imaging yourself lying in your warm sleepingbag (BEST BDAY PRESENT!thanks for that!!), hearing crickets and coyeties doing their animal sound, fresh air on your face and in front of you a clear shining sky full of uncountable stars. We are going to do this no tent thingy much more I guess.

Now it is evening again. We rested today after we walked 28 miles/44km (!!!!Really, it just happened) yesterday. We had a shower (three times scrubbing till the sanddirt came off), ate veggie hameburgers, got our resupply and some vitamins. Tomorrow we will get up again before sunset. So good night to you and we will post again in about 60miles.

Kick off in the rain

We have been to Lake Morenan Campground for the PCT Kickoff for two days. The Kickoff is organized by a lot of former PCT-hikers, who give information about the PCT and provide a meeting place for all the new hikers. After two days (do not miss the Kickoff if you want to hike the PCT), we started to walk from Lake Moreno to Mount Laguna. At that point it really felt like we were beginning of the PCT since there was no Kickoff ahead of us anymore. All that was ahead were about 2600 miles to Canada, but that were too many miles to think about. So we aimed for the next campground and walked through desert landscape in light rain and fog. It did not really feel like the desert. Not just because it was raining, also because there were a lot of beautiful plants with colorful flowers. It felt more like walking in a botanical garden.

At Mount Laguna we were all soaking wet and it was chilly. Two hikers decided to sleep on the floor of the restroom of the campground because there tents were wet and the restrooms were slightly warmer. The next day we walked 4 more miles to Laguna Campground. The owner of an outfitting store gave us the advise not to walk any further than that because wind as strong as 80 miles/ hour was expected at the ridgeline of the mountain. As we were walking it was really foggy, raining and the wind was blowing strong. But it still felt good to be on the trail. At Laguna Campground we tried to set our tents up. Since the weather became worse and the wind was so strong that our tent stakes did not hold to the ground I had to find stones and put them on the stakes. I was wet and cold when the tent finally was set up. I cannot remember the last time a hot shower felt so good. I fell asleep hoping that the tent stakes would hold...

The first day is done, and there is already so much to tell.

First it was a bit surreal to stand at the southern terminus. We looked, read, spoke about the pct for months and than suddenly you stand there ready to go.

It all looked a bit different as we expected to be. The terminal, but most of all the trail. It doesnt look that dry at all. It is filled with green bushes and the weirdest beautiful colorful flowers and animals. You don't know where to look really.

And than it happens that you walk on a snake. Of course, we are well prepared and know we should watch our steps. (The mantra in our heads sort of sounds like 'snake, poison oak, snake, poison oak'... ) So in the moment your partner thinks he is walking over a treetrank, you trustfully follow him, while you look around spotting the hugh eagle that just flew over. And than BAM; snake between the legs. And BAM we are warmed up.

But we learned from it, this ain't gonna happen with brother rattlely... At least snake wise. We watch our steps way more better and tried to also keep poison oak eyes up. But as we arrive at hauser creek, we got our second eye opener: we happily walked straight through a bush of nice sweet poison oak. So that's on the list too.

All good. The great thing up here is that we are walking with a bunch of other hikers who all go through the same (bushes) or give you dishwashsoap to clean off the mean oils.

You get a deeper respect for nature and that's exactly what we are looking for.. and good food of course ;)

Getting into San Diego.

So... The backpacks are filled and full waiting to be brought into the desert.

Till the last minute before bedtime, we have be running around, originazing the last stuff. But now, it's finally on. Tomorrow morning, we will leave Scout and Frodo's* home. We will leave this incredible hikers heaven with it's great hospitality, food, people, beds.... And will walk into the dessert, where the most water is to be found on our backs.

We are excited and thrilled... Finally finally we gonna meet you PCT!! 👊

*Scout and Frodo are 'trailnames', something hikers get when they are on or around the trail. The names are born out of crazy and funny trailstories, which are always nice to ask for.
